Movies Like Manhunter: Crime Thrillers That Get Under Your Skin

Follow the tension from Michael Mann’s Manhunter to Japan, South Korea and Europe.

Manhunter is slick, gritty and a whole lot more tense than it first lets on. If the cat-and-mouse investigation and unsettling atmosphere kept you hooked, follow that feeling across borders. These are films to explore, connected by mood rather than identical plots.

Start here: Manhunter · 1986

Michael Mann gives the investigation a cold, vivid look. Watch how Will Graham’s pursuit of a killer starts to press on his own life. If the colours and suspense are your thing, the next three take that unease in very different directions.

THE MISTRYMAN TAKE

You could feel the grit and suspense. It was a lot more tense then I thought🐉  Mann is always so slick with his cat and mouse movies. Great use of colors as well  These late 80s-90s thrillers are so thrilling. Ending was so Over the top, I loved it

Cure · Japan, 1997

Kiyoshi Kurosawa follows a detective investigating a string of murders with a chilling pattern. Where Manhunter builds its tension through colour and momentum, Cure slows everything down. The conversations are as unsettling as the case itself.

Memories of Murder · South Korea, 2003

Bong Joon Ho’s crime drama follows detectives pursuing a serial killer in a rural community. Start this one for the investigation, then pay attention to how uncertainty and frustration change the people working the case. It mixes dark humour into the dread, giving it a very different rhythm from Mann’s film.

The Vanishing · Netherlands and France, 1988

George Sluizer turns a disappearance into a study of obsession. There’s less procedural momentum here: the tension comes from one person’s need to know what happened. Go in knowing as little as possible.
